Commentary

- This is a commentary of Nadia's post and it is originally composed by Via -
Nadia's blog

The writer’s purpose is to give information about her own life and to create sympathy. . In the first paragraph ,the writer puts “injustice, racisms, criminals, “.Actually injustice and racisms are abstract nouns, so the writer supposed to put crime than criminals. And at the second line of the first paragraph the writer should not put comma before the word “ and”.

The writer tries to attract the reader by sarcastic sentence the first paragraph. The reader is forced to imagine what it must be like to live in fear of one’s life in cramped conditions.

In the second paragraph , there is an error in the first sentence where the writer only a tobebefore the word become. The tobe is supposed to be eliminated. As in the first sentence,  the writer should use past tenses because it tells about what had happened.

At the same time, the clause shows the writer’s story was tense. The article shows that she never was in a good condition. The writer puts lots of conflicts there, which can make the reader become attracted and feared.

In the third paragraph ,the writer starts to tell her story from the first time she went to school ,by taking the word “school was like a prison “ shows that her day was filled with war,.

Next, in the fourth paragraph ,the writer uses the words “Latino’s, Chinese, Ghettos, and a white kid” signifies that the writer’s school was acist. The writer puts oxymoron word which is “It’s quite painful.

The fifth paragraph the writer uses a figure of speech which is repetition, that can be found in a word “Shouted at each other, mocked at each other” .The word “each other is repeated. It is used twice.

In the seventh paragraph, the writer uses a sentence  “my Chinese friend died “ the writer uses sarcastic tone. The writer actually should put a euphemism to make it more smoothie.

In the last paragraph ,the writer uses capital letters,it is seen from the word “SHE COULD TEACH US UNTIL WE FINISHED OUR JUNIOR HIGH SCHOOL.  the purpose is to give an anger effect .

At the end the writer shows that the teacher’s dream which is  “make her students better” is coming true. And the writer uses a pleasant tone.

Erin Gruwell : The Woman Who Brought Freedom

An American teacher was born August 15 1969 in California. She inspired lots of people and  was known for her unique teaching method.  Teaching in a public school which consist of American, Chinese and American-African races. Then she made those different races became like a family. How incredible she was.

She began teaching her students in 1994 at Woodrow Wilson High school  in Long Beach, California.
First day of going to school seemed like the worst day that she had ever felt.  No students were listening to her, they were just busy with their people and then went fighting with each people and Gruwell couldn’t stop them. The second day was the same, no changes but she kept trying and learnt to be more patient to face her students.

On the next day, Tito ,one of her students was drawing an African American’s  face with extremely large lips. Gruwell told her students that there was a type of caricature that the Nazis had used during the Holocaust. When only one of the students knew what the Holocaust was, Gruwell changed the theme of her curriculum to tolerance. Holocaust is a murder that was claimed to be done by the Naz to wiped-out Jews around Europe, so only a few Jews who were saved in the Holocaust time.

Gradually, the condition changed and it was an incredible time for Gruwell. She could teach them and made them become educated people. Everyday, her students were reading books that she had bought until all of them were attracted to read and read it again ,especially  the Anne Frank’s book.

In the fall of 1995, Gruwell  gave each of her students a bag full of new books and asked them to make ‘Toast for Change. After that, she saw a turn around in them . The students went on to surprise everyone. A sad news came to Gruwell that she was divorced by her husband, Scott.  It was because she spent almost a whole day with her students and  Scott thought that she couldn’t take care of him.

Gruwell bought new books from her own pocket and invited guest speaker who could inspire her students. This guest was special to compare with others. This guest was related to Anne Frank’s book which was their favourite book. She was the women who helped  Anne Frank .

Gruwell returned to Wilson High as a full-time teacher. She aksed her students to make journals of their lives. She also had the students to read the books written by and about other teenagers in times of war. Then she asked them to make a book that consist of their stories with the title The Freedom Writers.

Writing journals became a solace for many of the students, and because the journals were shared anonymously, teenagers who once refused to speak to someone of a different race became like a family. At the end all Freedom Writers graduated from high school and many of Gruwell’s students went to attend college.

My diary entry..........

Friday January 10 , 2014

Dear diary, today I feel so lonely because my dear classmate is not coming to school. I really miss her so much, she's the one who always makes my whole day amazing. I mean sometimes hahaha just kidding.

She's amazing, first she's pious and have a lot of knowledge about Islam ,she spent her day by giving advices to people. I know this year will be the last year for me and her. I don't know what will happen to me when she is gone, maybe go to  Japan and meet her or maybe just stay here with boredom. Even we are separated ,we will still fight to face and pass Cambridge Examination together.

I have lots of experiences with her and it is hard for us to stop it now. But, however we have to support each other, no matter how far she goes , I want the whole world to know that we are together.
I hope one day there will be a new student in my class and will sit beside me, I wish it is girl, if it is boy...( no comment)

Imaginative writing

Victoria Boulevard

Assalamualaikum warrahmatullahi wabarokatu.
Dear  Xavic

My dear grandchild, how are you? I hope you are fine and under the protection of Allah. I want to tell you something important that can affect and bring you into failure.

There are plenty of high school students influenced  other students to follow their bad behaviors. After school they hang around to catch one student and force them to drink  alcohol and the other drugs until they are addicted.

With this letter I do not want my beloved grandchild getting influenced and I just want to remind you to be more careful.

Lots of love
Grandma

Cell membranes and Transport

Phospholipids
A substance whose molecules are made up of a glycerol molecule , two fatty acids and a phosphate group; a bilayer of phospholipids forms the basic structure of all cell membranes. Interestingly, when a phospholipid is placed in water, it spontaneously folds upon itself to create a double layer or bilayer.

Here are some examples of Phosholipids in water
a. Spread as a singgle layer of molecules( a monolayer) on the surface of water
b. Forming micelles surrounded by water
c. Forming bilayers
d. Bilayers forming membrane-bound compartments

Structure Of Membrane
Membranes have many different functions with a typical cell, such as keeping unwanted viruses out, buht probably the most valuable is the partitioning of the cell into the functional and segregated compartments.

This is the diagram of the fluid mosaic model of membrane structure.

The Roles of the domponents of cell membranes

1. Phospholipids : This is the basic structure of membrane .They act as barrier to most water-soluble molecules such as sugars, amino acids & proteins cannot leak out of the cell, and unwanted water soluble molecules cannot enter the cell.

2.  Cholesterol : Is a relatively small molecule ,the function is they fit neatly between the phospholipid molecules with their heads at the membrane surface.

3. Glycolipids, glycoproteins and proteins : They form hydrogen bonds with the water molecules and help to stabilise the membrane structure.

Transport across the cell surface membrane
There are 5 basic mechanisms by which this exchange is achieved : Diffusion, Facilitated diffusion, Osmosis , Active transport and bulk transport.

A. Diffusion : can be defined as the net movement, as a result of  random motion of its molecules or ions, of a substance from a region from its higher concentration to a region of its lower concentration.

A substance diffuses across a membrane depends on a factors , such as :
1.The 'steepness' of the concentration gradient.
2. Temperature
3. The surface area
4. The nature of the molecules or ions

B. Facilitated Diffusion : It can only cross the membrane with the help of certain protein molecules.Facilitate means to make easy or make possible and this is what the proteins do.

C. Osmosis : is the best regarded as special type of diffusion involving water molecules only.

D. Active transport :as the energy consuming transport of molecules or ions across a membrane against a concentration gradient.
E. Bulk transport :  There are two type of it which is :
1. Endocytosis : engulfing of the material by the cell surface membrane to form a small sac or 'endocytic vacuole' it takes to forms ,they are Phagocytosis (cell eating) and Pinocytosis (cell drinking).
2. Exocytosis : is the process by which materials are removed from cells.

Bohol Earthquake

It was really hard to accept this, I don't even know that this would be happening to our neighbor country. When I saw on TV ,it was really shocking me . I need a million time to believe it. I saw many corpses out there ,it was like the sea of corpses where the water is blood. I heard people were crying ,they were trying to find their families among the ruins ,which hard to find it. Scream and shouts were like the sound background of this disaster. I can't believe it , I lost everything that I have , I forgot to taste what's happiness.
They were trying to get out from ruins , the sounds was thunderous when the buildings crashed to their little body. As you know that without  telling you,you can directly imagine how the condition is. A small body asked for help ,but no one couldn't  help ,they were busy with their safety ,they were trying to survive but they couldn't escape it. Can you imagine a giant rubble crashed them , an asphalt road  split so that they fit into it. Oh my goodness ,the only thing that we can do for them is pray hard for them ,pray for our neighbor country . And hopefully this would be the last disaster that came to us. Stay strong my brothers and sisters in Philippines out there , may God bless you on what has happened to you.

 - Test tube
- Filter funnel
- Mortar & Pestle
- Stiring rod
- Test tube rack
- Filter paper

Preparation of a solid sample :

1. Completely crushes adequate amount of food with a clean and dry mortar and pestle.
2. Transfer an adequate amount of crushed food sample to a clean test tube
3. Adds 2cm ethanol above the food sample
4. Shakes the test tube thoroughly and safely .
5. Allows the solid to settle for about 3 min
6. Decants the ethanol carefully into a clean, dry test tube without transference of food particles.
7. Adds 2cm of de-ionized water to the test tube
8. Compares each result with the negative control
9. Compares the heights of the emulsion layer of all the samples

Process

  • Add the food sample to 2 cm3 of ethanol, shake well.
  • Allow to settle in a test tube rack for 2 minutes for food to dissolve in ethanol.
  • Empty any clear liquid into a test tube containing 2 cm3 of distilled H2O.
  • MILKY-WHITE EMULSION is a positive result: lipid is present.
  • If the mixture remains clear, there are no fats present in the sample
